Inshore scallop ranch
Designed England's first scallop ranch to improve livelihoods for inshore scallop fishers whilst reducing the environmental impact of England’s most controversial fishery.
We explored England’s first inshore scallop fishery through working with fishers, local government, scientists, and the fishing industry. We learnt hands-on through spending time diving for scallops, undertaking genetic testing, visiting scallop hatcheries and fish markets.
These journeys led us to design the UK’s first community managed scallop ‘ranching’ strategy. A network of community operated scallop ranches will reduce the marine environmental destruction caused by wild scallop dredging, whilst improving the economic outputs for coastal fishermen.
Common Seas developed the system, created global partnerships with key science, fishing industry and government experts. Wrote business plan. Acquired first phase investment.
