Working for Pew Charitable Trusts Jo led the Global Ocean Legacy UK campaign, working with local communities, governments and scientists around the world to protect and conserve some of our most important and unspoiled ocean environments.

The United Kingdom, caretaker of the fifth-largest marine zone in the world, including some of the last spectacular wild places on Earth, has become a world leader in efforts to save our oceans.

In March 2015, the UK Government announced the world’s largest fully protected marine reserve in the Pitcairn Islands. At 834,334 square kilometres, the Pitcairn Islands Marine Reserve spans an area over three times the size of the UK and safeguard more than 1,200 known species. 

Setting a new standard for the enforcement of protected areas, innovative new technology created through the campaign are being be used to monitor the reserve at a dramatically reduced cost. 

The announcement demonstrated truly global leadership on marine protection by the UK and paves the way for the creation of additional marine reserves in the UK Overseas Territories supported by science and community.
