Ocean literacy

Establishing new ways of balancing our relationship with each other and Nature lies at the heart of our role as caretakers of the planet.

‘Wild time’ when we’re immersed in Nature, inspires and enriches our connection with the natural systems that sustain our lives. Helping to promote a conscious and responsible use of natural resources.

Common Seas works towards ensuring all young people in the UK learn about the ocean, through direct experience. There are third generation families living in the UK who have never seen the sea. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet yet young people in the UK can go through their entire school life without learning about the ocean. In 2013 Common Seas and Digital Explorer partnered to create the Ocean Literacy Consortium. This group of leading marine scientists, educators and advocates came together to improve ocean related content in the National Curriculum.

We wish the National Curriculum encouraged all young people into spending time learning outside.
